Metatomic, Inc. was formed to complete the commercial nuclear fuel cycle by metamorphosing legacy stored spent nuclear fuel (SNF) into a usable new fuel for the next generation of nuclear power plants. Metatomic has patent-pending processes designed to convert SNF into fuel for the new molten salt reactors (MSRs) currently under development. Metatomic's processes will potentially reduce the SNF volume stored in dry casks today by up to 90% allowing for the near elimination of SNF storage problem while simultaneously providing years of viable fuel for clean energy production. Additionally, when used as fuel for MSR power generation, the Metatomic process is projected to effectively reduce the radiological hazard of SNF by 99+%.

NuGen is developing the NuGen Engine™, a robust single-module, direct-cycle gas-cooled microreactor. Within the module, its patented innovative fuel core is fully integrated with the reactor’s other components and systems, offering one of the safest and simplest microreactor designs. The output of the NuGen Engine™ would be scalable between 1-50 MWe and it would offer process heat for cogeneration and direct mechanical energy for propulsion. NuGen’s current design efforts are focused on a semi-autonomous transportable ultra-compact engine for off-grid uses, such as remote locations, mining sites and national security infrastructure. This design would be adaptable for other off-grid uses and lunar applications.

NuScale’s innovative thinking led the development of an Integral Pressurized Water Reactor (IPWR). The reactor, steam generator, pressurizer, and containment are integrated into a single module.
